Carl Johnson was born and raised in Illinois. Very active in his church while growing up, he gained full assurance of his salvation in the fall of 1969 while a student at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. After earning his Bachelor and Masters Degrees in music at Northwestern, he taught in public school for nine years.

In 1982 he moved to Texas with his wife and three children to teach music at A.B.C. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible from ABC in 1986, and in 1993, he became Director of Distance Education, developing a total of fifteen courses while continuing to teach full time. To date, he has overseen over 150 different semester hours of coursework at ABC. Since coming to Texas God has blessed him with two additional children, a son-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and three grandchildren. He has three sons, Benjamin, Michael, and Matthew, and two daughters, Becky and Melody.

He continues to teach private voice, class voice, and secondary music education. He also oversees the student teaching of music education majors and offers other music classes as needed.
In addition to his music responsibilities at the college, he oversees the Distance Education program, and teaches classes in Bible, Christian ministries, New Testament Greek, and an occasional general studies class.
Meanwhile, he has remained active in his local church. With over 30 years of teaching experience in both the class room and as a Sunday school teacher, he has been a minister of music for over 20 years.
