BIBLE – MUSIC MINISTRIES

Students interested in the application of music as a ministry upon graduation from Bible college will benefit from the Bible and Music Ministries Program. This program leads to the Bachelor of Science Degree.

 

 

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

The following information applies to all students interested in a degree with a music major.

 

 

ENTRANCE AUDITION

Each student must pass an entrance audition before initial enrollment in the program. The student must select and perform from memory two selections of music of contrasting style.

Degrees Programs

 

PROFICIENCY PLACEMENT EXAMS

Students must successfully complete proficiency exams administered by the department. Students having deficiencies will be required to do remedial work. Credit is not awarded for these proficiency exams. Students may be exempt from certain requirements upon successful completion of the exams.

 

 

COMPREHENSIVE EXIT BARRIER

To assure that the student is integrating course work in a correct manner, comprehensive exams will be administered orally in the junior and senior years. The exams will cover the areas of music history, theory, sight singing and ear training, conducting, and secondary piano.

RECITALS

A junior recital, MUA 3000, is performed by music students who have completed the 2000 level applied courses. All music students are required to attend departmental recitals.

 

 

JURIES

Students are tested on their semester work and preparation during final exam week by a jury composed of music faculty members.

ACCOMPANYING AND SONG LEADING

Capable keyboard students may be required to accompany performances or other functions at the discretion of the department, or they may be asked to supervise beginning keyboard instruction. Students may be required to lead congregational singing in Chapel or another departmentally approved function.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The graduate who completes this program will:

1.
Have developed a well-defined philosophy of music based on Biblical principles.
2.
Have the skills necessary to supervise the musical program and worship service of a local church.
3.
Understand the place music has in local church worship and ministries.
4.
Be equipped to develop a well-rounded music training program in a local church.
5.
Appreciate music as a medium of worship and an expression of Christian faith.
6.
Be equipped to provide service to a church in a related ministry.

 

 

 

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

1.
The Core Curriculum: delete SPH 1301
2.
Church Ministries elective: 2 hours
3.

Music requirement: 51 to 56 hours distributed between applied, theory, and cognate courses

a.
Primary application: 8 hours: voice or piano
b.
Secondary application: 4 hours: piano or voice
c.
Other applied courses: MUA 1100 or 1110 in any combination for 6 hours, MUA 3201, and MUA 4201
d.
Music theory: MUT 2213, 2214, 2301, 2302, 3213, 3214, 3301, and 3302
e.
Other music required: MUS 3212, 3201, 3202, 4201, and 4202
   
4.
Minimum requirement: 129 semester hours
5.
Christian character expected of a music minister
6.
Fulfillment of all requirements in the Christian Service Program
