MUS 1000. PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS                              0 CREDIT HOURS

All music majors must attend at least three formal concerts/recitals per semester. (At least one of these must be in their area of applied major.) Signed programs are submitted to the music department as proof of attendance. (Replaces Music Lab)

MUS 1211. MINISTRY OF MUSIC.                                                   2 CREDIT HOURS

A study of notation, rhythm and conducting patterns with heavy emphasis on practical aspects of congregational song leading make up this course. Attention will be given to the place of music in the church and the relationship of the pastor and the music director. No credit for music majors.

MUS 2201. CLASS WINDS                                                                 2 CREDIT HOURS

This class examines basic brass and woodwind techniques. Following class instruction, students will be expected to demonstrate basic performance competence on both a brass and woodwind instrument. (Rental fee required)


MUS 2202. CLASS STRINGS                                                              2 CREDIT HOURS

This class examines basic performance instructions regarding stringed instruments of the orchestra. Students learn to recognize and perform basic bowing techniques, articulations, and scales. (Rental fee required)

MUS 2303. PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE OF CHURCH MUSIC.  3 CREDIT HOURS

An examination is made of the role of minister of music, his relationship to the Lord, his pastor, and the church. This course will focus on the practical aspects of developing a music ministry for the 21st century. Development of a Biblically based philosophy of music is included as well as the Biblical foundations for church music.

 

MUS 2308. EC-ELEMENTARY MUSIC/DRAMA                             3 CREDIT HOURS

This course is a continuation of music fundamentals with emphasis on pedagogy for the preschool and elementary grades. Music history and the relationship of music to history, society, and culture are explored. A study of materials and techniques for incorporating dramatic play and creative drama in the curriculum of these grades is provided. An emphasis is placed on student participation.

MUS 3212. HYMNOLOGY                                                                  2 CREDIT HOURS

This course is a study of hymnody in the history of Christianity with attention given to the functions of hymnody in the life of the church.

MUS 3301. MUSIC HISTORY I.                                                          3 CREDIT HOURS

The music of Western Civilization from antiquity through the 20th century is studied. Attention is given to major composers, style characteristics and performance practices of each period. Prerequisite: MUT 3214.

MUS 3302. MUSIC HISTORY II.                                                        3 CREDIT HOURS

Continues the study begun in MUS 3301 with an emphasis on the Classic through the 20th century. Attention is given to major composers, style characteristics and performance practices of each period. Special attention will also be given to the history of Christian music as each period is studied. Prerequisite: MUS 3301.

MUS 4201. MUSIC AND WORSHIP                                                  2 CREDIT HOURS

This course is designed to introduce students to the study of Christian worship and sacred music. A survey of contemporary worship practices will also be studied including field experiences in various forms.

MUS 4202. CHURCH MUSIC ADMINISTRATION                         2 CREDIT HOURS

MUS 4212. PIANO PEDAGOGY.                                                       2 CREDIT HOURS

An investigation of the methods of conventional piano teaching with emphasis on materials and the latest developments in teaching techniques make up this course.

MUS 4213. VOCAL PEDAGOGY.                                                      2 CREDIT HOURS

A study is made of the physiology and aural qualities of good singing and the diagnosis of vocal faults and corrective measures. Emphasis is placed on techniques for teaching.

MUS 4301. ELEMENTARY MUSIC EDUCATION I.                        3 CREDIT HOURS

A study of the child-development approach to music education with emphasis on curriculum, methods, and materials is covered in this course. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be addressed throughout the course. Prerequisite: MUT 2213, 2214, 2301, 2302 or equivalent and major in music.

MUS 4304. SECONDARY MUSIC EDUCATION.                            3 CREDIT HOURS

This course is designed to give the prospective music teacher an overview of secondary music education in regard to philosophy and practice, and to help him/her develop the tools necessary to teach music at this level. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be addressed throughout the course.

 

MUS 4305. CURRICULUM PLANNING.                                           3 CREDIT HOURS

This course covers the planning and design of a music curriculum. It includes writing lesson plans and demonstrating music skills at every grade level. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) will be addressed throughout the course.

MUS 4606. STUDENT TEACHING.                                                    6 CREDIT HOURS

This course provides for a twelve (12) week internship in classroom music teaching. Prerequisite: Completion of required music education courses.
