EDU 4204. DISCIPLINE AND CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT. 2 CREDIT HOURS
This course describes what the prospective teacher can do to create a well-managed classroom, including planning in several key areas before the school year begins, implementing the plan and establishing good management at the beginning of the year, and maintaining the management procedures throughout the year.
EDU 4205. MEASUREMENT AND EVALUATION 2 CREDIT HOURS
This course is a study of the measurement and evaluation tools for the improvement of the teaching-learning process. The course includes a study of standardized tests, methods of measurement and evaluation, and innovative means for assessing students’ learning.
EDU 4301. 8th-12th SOCIAL STUDIES 3 CREDIT HOURS
The importance of the various social science disciplines and how they relate to the secondary grade student’s society and world is emphasized. A major portion of the Social Studies course will include planning and implementing effective curriculum, instruction, and assessment and evaluation. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives will be addressed throughout this course.
EDU 4302. SECONDARY GEOGRAPHY/ECONOMICS 3 CREDIT HOURS
(Replaces EDU 4304. Geography/Economics)
Regional, social, and economic characteristics of the geography of the U.S., specifically, Texas, as they relate to 4-12 students are emphasized. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives will be addressed throughout this course.
EDU 4303. SECONDARY LANGUAGE ARTS 3 CREDIT HOURS
The disciplines of secondary Language Arts such as reading, written language, and literature are emphasized. Instructional strategies for each of these disciplines are included. Emphasis is placed upon Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) throughout this course.
EDU 4306. EC-ELEMENTARY SCIENCE 3 CREDIT HOURS
This course emphasizes the preparation for instructional strategies for teaching science content according to TEKS in physical science, life science, earth and space science, and universal processes that are common to all sciences. EC-EL Science also includes the supervision of labs and activities in a safe and professional way, appropriate assessment and assessment practices to monitor science learning, and guided individual and group inquiry and its role in science instruction.
EDU 4307. EC-8 SOCIAL STUDIES 3 CREDIT HOURS
The importance of the various social science disciplines and how they relate to the EC – 8th grade child’s society and environment is emphasized. A major portion of the Social Studies course will include planning and implementing effective curriculum, instruction, and assessment and evaluation. The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) objectives will be addressed throughout this course.
EDU 4309. EC-8 LANGUAGE ARTS 3 CREDIT HOURS
The disciplines of EC-8 Language Arts such as oral language, listening and speaking skills, phonological and phonemic awareness, alphabetic principle, and word analysis and decoding are emphasized. Instructional strategies for teaching spelling and the written language are included. Development of all these skills directs a child toward literacy, fluency, and reading comprehension. The developmental process is stressed.
EDU 4310. CURRICULUM. 3 CREDIT HOURS
This course is designed to familiarize students with curriculum in general, as well as with the various disciplines in a school curriculum (content, learning activities, pedagogy, assessment). Special attention is given to evaluating curriculum guides, to organizing interdisciplinary lessons/units, to reviewing the domains and competencies of the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) tests, and to using the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for various EC-12 disciplines. This course is a prerequisite to student teaching and is taken as part of the student teaching block during the senior year.
EDU 4610. TEACHING PRACTICUM. 6 CREDIT HOURS
Twelve weeks of on-the-job training as a classroom teacher is provided for the education major. Prerequisite: Completion of required education methods courses.
